Welcome to WikiProject Snooker. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions and various resources; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians interested in the topic. If you would like to help, please join the project, inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list below.

To-do list[edit]

Feel free to add your own suggestions below.

See also: the general cue sports to-do list.

Missing articles (non-bio)[edit]

Player biographies[edit]

  • Check all player biographies to verify content. Look at tournament wins to see if all tournaments won by the player are listed. Make sure information is current for this year/season (often it is not).

Major improvements needed[edit]

Needed biographies[edit]

This list is transcluded from Wikipedia:WikiProject Snooker/Wanted snooker bios.
Historical notables

Bios missing infoboxes[edit]

Former professionals[edit]

Other things to do[edit]

Article improvement[edit]

  • Improve the International Billiards and Snooker Federation article.
  • Make much more use of Snooker world rankings - every (first in main article text) mention of rankings or ranking events in snooker articles needs to be linked here. Readers who are not already major fans do not understand the rather complicated ranking system, much less the difference between ranking, minor ranking & non-ranking events, and are liable to be confused about an event being called ranking in one article but not in another (due to its status changing from one year to another).
  • Identify and add stub stags to stub articles using the templates below.
  • Expand the stubs in Category:Snooker stubs and Category:Snooker biography stubs.
  • Add content to World Championship pages.
  • Create illustrative and detailed article section at Cue stick on snooker cues, which differ (typically) in a number of ways from cues used in pool and carom billiards (length, flat area on the butt, where the joint is, metal ferrule, and most importantly the smaller tip).
  • Add timelines, general and specific, as appropriate (e.g. a timeline of snooker history, vs. a timeline of Ronnie O'Sullivan's career), and textual or graphical, as appropriate. See WP:Timeline for details, guidelines and examples.
  • Update {{World Snooker}}, where it's necessary.
  • Century break needs updating. Any updates should observe the consensus at WT:SNOOKER#RfC: Does the use of self-published sources in snooker articles violate BLPSPS and SPS? and avoid using self-published sources since they have many inconsistencies. Suitable WP:SOURCES include dedicated magazines/journals with editorial oversight such as Snooker Scene, mainstream news and sport outlets (such as BBC News or Eurosport) and the professional governing body, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, and its commercial arm, World Snooker.

Project tasks[edit]

These are the major templates used by the project.

Talk page banners[edit]

Code {{WikiProject Snooker|class=Stub|importance=Low|needs-image=yes}}
[other banners]
{{Find sources|{{PAGENAME}}|snooker}}
WikiProject Snooker (Rated Stub-class, Low-importance)
WikiProject iconThis article is within the scope of WikiProject Snooker, a collaborative effort to improve the coverage of snooker on Wikipedia. If you would like to participate, please visit the project page, where you can join the discussion and see a list of open tasks.
Stub-Class article Stub  This article has been rated as Stub-Class on the quality scale.
 Low  This article has been rated as Low-importance on the importance scale.

[other banners]
Find sources: Google (books · news · newspapers · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · NYT · TWL

Usage On talk pages of non-bio snooker articles The values shown are defaults for typical new articles. In some cases, another project's banner should be above ours. E.g., if it's a film, the {{WikiProject Films}} banner should be first. The DEFAULTSORT must come after all project banners and such (but before any cleanup categories) or it won't work. Please do include it, as it helps sort articles in our internal categories, instead of having them all under "T" for "Talk:..."
Code {{WikiProject banner shell|blp=yes|1=
 {{WikiProject Snooker|class=Stub|importance=Low|needs-photo=yes}}
 {{WPBiography|listas=FamilyName, GivenName
  |sports-work-group=yes |living=yes
  |class=Stub |priority=Low |sports-priority=Low

 [other banners]
{{Photo requested|cue sports people}}
{{DEFAULTSORT:Familyname, GivenName}}
{{Find sources|FirstName LastName|snooker}}
Appearance As above, but with additional features. A demo of it is on the project sandbox talk page; (It cannot be displayed here because some of the templates involved will not display properly on a non-talk page.)
Usage On talk pages of biographical snooker articles The values shown are defaults for typical new articles. Remove |blp=yes and change |living=yes to read no if deceased. The DEFAULTSORT must come after all project banners and such (but before any cleanup categories) or it won't work. Please do include it, as it helps sort articles in our internal categories, instead of having them all under "T" for "Talk:..." Please also use the DEFAULTSORT in the article too, immediately above the first category, and then you won't need to do any "|Familyname, Givenname" stuff after the category names. Note that |needs-photo-yes= is added to our banner; the special {{Photo requested}} uses and different category (and it is also used with {{WPBiography}}). Additional instances of {{Find sources}} can be used for alternative names.

User invite template[edit]

Code What it looks like Where to use
{{Snooker invite}} On the talk page of users, who actively contribute to snooker-related articles but are not members of the project.

Code What it looks like Where to use
{{Snooker-bio-stub}} On stub articles about people related to snooker, namely snooker players.
{{UK-snooker-bio-stub}} On stub articles about people related to snooker out of the UK, namely snooker players out of the UK.
{{Snooker-stub}} On stub articles related to Snooker.

Tournament brackets[edit]

Current events[edit]

These warn readers that article may be updated frequently as results come in:

As the links in these templates suggest, any such event should be added to Portal:Current events/Sports.

Inline time-savers[edit]

  • {{Cuegloss}} for convenient wikilinking of terms in articles to their definitions in the glossary: {{Cuegloss|Black ball|the black}} is the equivalent of [[Glossary of cue sports terms#Black ball|the Black]]. This template is never subst'd.
  • {{World Snooker}} for rapid entry of citations of official WPBSA player bios. This template is never subst'd.
  • {{WSfast}} an even more rapid-entry version for cases where the accessdate is today. This template should always subst'd.

  • World Snooker - Good for player profiles.
  • BBC Sport: Snooker – Good for results/news, especially for the tournaments the BBC broadcast.
  • - Results for main tour tournaments after the 1993/1994 season.
  • WPBSA Tournament Manager - Results from recent years, and upcoming tournament details, for World Disability Billiards and Snooker, Seniors Snooker, World Snooker Federation, World Women's Snooker, English Partnership for Snooker and Billiards
  • Global Snooker - Results for tournaments and player profiles.
  • Chris Turner's Snooker Archive – An excellent resource for stats, records and snooker history. (At )
  • News Now - Snooker
  • Webcite- Not a resource for snooker, but an online archiving service. Since online sources for snooker tend to be volatile links can often go dead leaving information unreferenced. It is good practice to archive every reference you add to the article and include the archive address in the main reference, so if the main link dies the sourced information will not be lost.
